Implementing Wellness Initiatives in the Workplace

Wellness in the workplace is of paramount importance to employer, employees, families of the employed and society as a whole.

While companies are increasingly having to address the physical aspects of occupational health and safety as a statutory requirement, the broader aspects of employee wellness continues to impact on their productivity and return on investment. A healthy workplace therefore makes business and humanitarian sense.

Effectiveness in addressing workplace wellness is just as essential as any other workplace processes. However, many leaders in the workplace are not mindful of the direction, scope, and inputs their organisation can and should pursue to achieve optimum outcomes and amazing benefits in this regard.

While subscribing to wellness day events that is gaining traction in the marketplace, particularly driven by medical aids, managers must have their own framework for wellness that is aligned to international best practice and customised to the respective needs of their organisation.

As the conduct of wellness days become more prevalent in organisations, the question arises, are we truly addressing the wellness of employees as can possibly be done in the workplace?

Does this one-day event address our respective challenges? Who is driving our wellness day.. is it the Medical Aid, statutory compliance or is it the collective spirit informed by the organisational values and goals? Who owns the wellness initiative in my organisation?

What is the wellness framework that underpins what we do? Is this framework aligned with the aspirations of all employees?

How do we know whether we are making impact? What are the opportunities for building leadership and creating a happy work climate and supportive culture that workplace wellness programme can provide?

The workshop on creating a healthy workplace explores the concept of wellness and causes of ill-being from an employee-centric perspective and will engage participants to relate the international framework of best practice formulated by WHO to their organisation.

This framework draws from international best practice and show the way for organisations to take control. Opportunities for developing leadership and employee participation in creating and taking responsibility for individual and collective wellness emerges.
