The government has identified the film industry as a sector with excellent potential for growth, and is regarded as a catalyst for both direct and indirect employment of people from different sectors of the economy. The South African film and television industry contributes around R3.5-billion a year to the country’s economy, according to the National Film and Video Foundation, an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, and employs an excess of approximately 25 000 people. The South African film industry created an increase in employment, which essentially meant that an additional two people benefitted from the new income derived from the direct, indirect and induced jobs created in the 2016/17 financial year. A direct impact of R4.4 billion on economic production, leading to a rise in total production in the economy to approximately R12.2 billion.
The skills required in the film production environment range from specialized technical and creative skills in areas such as script-writing, camera, sound, lighting and editing; aesthetic skills in make-up, costume, music and cinematography and managerial skills in people, project, finance and marketing. Our qualification provides generic foundational skills in these key competency areas. Gain a solid introduction in film and television to embark on a career within the industry.

Career prospects within the film and television industry include Production Assistant, Junior Producer, Field Producer and Television Content Assistant with an average earning potential of R 21 500.
