Over 300 youth have secured permanent employment with top companies after completing the Monyetla Work Readiness Programme.
Monyetla – meaning “opportunity” – is an initiative of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Business Trust. In partnership with leading South African and global call centre and BPO employer companies, i-Fundi trained and placed over 450 previously disadvantaged, unemployed youth in a four month fast-track call centre skills programme designed to provide essential skills to get youth ready for work.
“We are delighted with the high completion and employment levels achieved.” says i-Fundi CEO, Stefan Lauber. “The Monyetla model shows that, given access to quality training and work experience, we can realistically address the serious economic woes of the country that are caused by youth unemployment.” Participating companies had the benefit of receiving appropriately screened and well-trained learners whose salaries were substantially lower than the going market rate for entry-level agents. “It is a win-win for both the learner and the employer” says Amanda Parker of global outsourcing company Aegis, which hosted 120 learners. “Even though the learners were new, their performance has exceded that of our more experienced recruits.” The next roll-out of the Monyetla programme is due to commence shortly.
